Food in Argentina
Argentina is famous for its
red meat. The national dish is the parrillada which can be roughly
translated as a barbeque. Both beef and lamb are specialities. Croissants,
known as ’media-lunas’ (half moons) are a breakfast standard and ham and cheese
sandwiches are a typical snack. As Buenos Aires is the capital and a large
cosmopolitan city, there is a variety of cuisine available from all over the
world.
Drinks in Argentina
Wine in Argentina is excellent and extremely good value. Beer is also good quality and the most popular beverage for the Argentineans.
Food in Brazil
The ’churrascaria’ is the Brazilian equivalent of the Argentine parrillada. Churrascaria
restaurants are popular in Brazil where a huge variety of meats is on offer
and on an ’all you can eat’ or ’by the kilo’ basis. The novelty of these churrascarias
is that often the meats are brought around to the tables by the waiters on huge
skewers and if one doesn’t learn quickly to say ’no’, they will soon find their
plate overflowing with meats of all descriptions. However food in Brazil is generally
quite distinct to that from Argentina. The stables are rice and beans,
and the national dish is the ’feijoada’, which is a delicious thick stew of beans and
pieces of pork and sausage. In the North-East of Brazil is the
influence of African spices and ingredients combining to form many
original Brazilian dishes.
Drinks in Brazil
Being a very large country having both temperate and tropical zones, as well as the largest
rainforest in the world, Brazil offers a huge variety of fruits.
Juices are made from these fruits, and combinations of fruits, and sold in
’lanchonetes’ (snack bars). Many of these fruits have no equivalent in English
and your tastebuds will be in a frenzy with flavours that you’ll have trouble finding a
comparison for. The most celebrated Brazilian cocktail is the
Caipirinha, which tastes even better with real Brazilian
limes. Understandably, because of the hot weather, ice-cold beer
is a very popular choice, especially around Carnival time.
