Giants Derby
Vasco v Fluminense
In Rio de Janeiro, there is a fierce rivalry between the 4 big clubs (Vasco, Flamengo, Botafogo and Fluminense).
Both Vasco da Gama and Fluminense have had their share of success at different times througout their history, and have generally mantained excellent footballing quality. Vasco's distinctive role in the extinction of the odious racial discrimination that scourged Brazilian football in its beginnings is a reason for the fans to be proud of, and deserves special mention. While Fluminense is also considered one of the most successful football clubs in Brazil, its greatest honour was not won in a football field. Among its collection of national and international trophies stands the diploma received in 1949 regarding the award of the IOC's Olympic Cup (Coupe Olympique).
