Argentina

The football match you will attend in Buenos Aires will typically be a national league game. In Argentina there are two national football league competitions each year called Clausura and Apertura. The Clausura runs in the first half of the year and the Apertura during the second half. We will take you to, what we expect to be, the most interesting game of the round. The most famous soccer clubs in Argentina are Boca Juniors, River Plate, and to a lesser extent Racing Club, Independiente, San Lorenzo, and Velez Sarsfield. We usually go for either a Boca Juniors or River Plate home game. The River Plate football stadium, Estadio Monumental, is the largest football stadium in Argentina and also used for Argentine national team matches, when they play at home. The Boca Juniors stadium is called 'La Bombonera' (the chocolate box), because of its unique shape, colourful appearance, and steep sided stands. The most intense rivalry is between these two clubs - Boca Juniors and River Plate. A Boca v River clash is known as a superclásico and has grown to legendary proportions.

Brazil

In Brazil we will typically take you to a national league game in Rio, featuring one or more of the most famous Rio football teams - Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Botafogo. The clasic local derby in Rio is a game between Flamengo and Fluminense - called a 'Flu-Fla'. Because of the huge interest generated in this clash it is usually played in the biggest football stadium possible, being the 110,000 capacity Maracana, that was built for the 1958 Football World Cup.

Special Games

Occasionally we are able to take you to a fixture in an alternative top level competition, such as a World Cup Qualifier, Copa Libertadores (the South American equivalent of the Champions League), Copa America, Copa Sudamericana, or a Recopa Sudamericana game. Generally theses football games are scheduled at shorter notice and it is more difficult for us to program and sell a tour in advance in these circumstances. However, we will offer tours involving such matches and these may involve a slight change in itinerary and/or price.
